Five pieces that turn a tow vehicle into a safe rig.

A weight distribution hitch alone doesn't make a safe tow rig. The hitch levels the load and kills sway, but only if the ball mount sets the trailer to the right height, the pin lock keeps it attached, the adapter keeps you connected, and the chains catch it all if the rest fails.

Setting up a weight distribution hitch: the numbers that matter
A weight distribution hitch only helps if it is set up to the numbers. These come from the Equal-i-zer owner’s manual, which covers the 6K, 10K, 12K and 14K models (our Best Overall is the 10K: 10,000 lb trailer, 1,000 lb tongue weight). If you tow with another brand, its manual comes first.
1. Tongue weight: 10 to 15 percent
Tongue weight should be between 10% and 15% of the gross trailer weight. Towing with less than 10% or more than 15% is on the manual’s list of things not to do. Never exceed the weight ratings for the trailer, the tow vehicle or the hitch; if the tongue weight or trailer weight is over the hitch’s rating, the manual says do not tow.
2. Ball height: 0 to 1 inch above the coupler
With the trailer level, measure from the ground to the top of the coupler. The top of the hitch ball should start between 0 and 1 inch above that height.
3. The front-end check: A, B and C
Measure from the ground to the wheel well above the front axle, and average the driver and passenger sides.
- A: trailer uncoupled.
- B: trailer coupled, weight distribution not engaged.
- C: trailer coupled, spring arms engaged.
The halfway point is (A + B) ÷ 2. C should come back at least to the halfway point, and never lower than A. C above the halfway point is under-adjusted. C lower than A is over-adjusted, which the manual calls a very dangerous situation where loss of control is possible.
4. Adjust with washers, then brackets
Most setups start with 5 spacer washers (6 or more if tongue weight is over 90% of the hitch’s rating; some lighter setups need only 4). Under-adjusted: add washers. Over-adjusted: remove them. Once you reach the maximum of 8 or the minimum of 4, move the L-brackets one hole at a time instead. Once the spring arms are tensioned, the built-in sway control is working.
Before you order: the 90-00-1001 kit does not include the hitch shank or the ball, per its listing. Plan the shank that fits your receiver height and a ball that matches your coupler.
