USCG Boat Safety Kit — Coast Guard Required Gear for 2026, Researched Picks & Buyer’s Guide

Four pieces that satisfy the regulation, satisfy the inspector, and bring the crew home.

USCG compliance is the floor, not the ceiling. Legal isn't the same as ready — most boaters skate by with the cheapest thing that satisfies each line item, and it does not bring the crew home if something goes sideways.

How we chose. Every pick earns its slot by solving one specific problem in this system, and by fitting the rest of the kit on this page. We’re a curation desk, not a lab — we rank by aggregated buyer data and system fit, updated monthly.

The Coast Guard checklist: boats 16 to 26 feet

The federal minimum for a recreational boat, in five checks. Your state can add more, so check your state boating office too.

  1. Life jackets. One USCG-approved wearable life jacket for every person aboard, the right size, and readily accessible (not in a bag or under gear).
  2. Throwable. One Type IV throwable device, immediately available. A 24-inch ring buoy is the classic Type IV.
  3. Fire extinguisher. On motorboats, at least one USCG-approved 5-B extinguisher (the rating once called B-I). Some open outboard boats under 26 feet are exempt.
  4. Visual distress signals. On coastal waters, signals approved for day and night use. Pyrotechnics: at least 3 for day and 3 for night, with dates not expired.
  5. Sound and lights. A whistle or horn on boats under 39.4 feet, and navigation lights from sunset to sunrise.

Frequently asked questions

How did you choose these safety & compliance kit picks?

Do I need every item in the safety & compliance kit?

No. Start with the Best Overall pick, then add the tier that matches how you use your rig. The table shows what each one solves.
