How We Choose
Last updated: July 27, 2026
Every page on this site says “Researched Picks.” This page explains exactly what that means, and what it does not mean, so you can judge our recommendations for yourself.
We pick systems, not products
Most gear lists hand you ten versions of the same item and leave the hard part to you. We work the other way around. We start with a job — keeping the lights on off-grid, getting fresh water aboard, hitching a fifth wheel safely — and assemble the set of parts that has to work together to do that job. A power station that cannot talk to your solar input is not a bargain, whatever the reviews say.
The method
- Define the job. We write down what the system has to accomplish and under what conditions — how much power, how many days, what the rig can physically carry.
- Set hard constraints. Connector standards, weight and space limits, electrical compatibility, and legal requirements. These eliminate most of the field before preference ever enters the picture.
- Shortlist on published specification. Manufacturer documentation, capacity and rating figures, materials, warranty terms, and how long a product has been on the market with the same part number.
- Check that the pieces fit each other. This is the step most lists skip, and it is where we spend the most time.
- Tier it. Good, better, and best — because the right answer depends on how often you use the rig, not on which product is objectively finest.
What we do not do
We think you are owed this part plainly.
- We do not lab test. We are a curation desk, not a testing facility. We do not own most of the gear on this site, and we will never claim we ran it through a bench.
- We do not publish prices, star ratings, or review counts. Those numbers move constantly and reproducing them off-platform is both unreliable and against Amazon’s terms. Tap through and read the live figures at the source.
- We do not rank by commission. Rates vary by category, and we have deliberately put inexpensive items in top slots where they were the right answer.
- We do not accept payment for placement. No manufacturer has ever paid to appear here, and if that changes we will say so on this page first.
How we make money
Affiliate commissions. If you buy through a link here we may earn a small fee at no extra cost to you — the full detail is in our affiliate disclosure. We would rather earn less on a recommendation that fits than more on one that does not, because the second kind only works once.
When we are wrong
Specifications change, manufacturers revise part numbers, and good products get worse. If a pick on this site is out of date or simply wrong, tell us at admin@outfittercollective.com and we will correct it and note the change. We would rather be corrected than trusted by default.
